2 Chronicles 36 Zedekiah King of Judah 11 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. 12 He did evil in the eyes of the LORD his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke the word of the LORD . 13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him take an oath in God's name. He became stiff-necked and hardened his heart and would not turn to the LORD , the God of Israel.
14 Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people became more and more unfaithful, following all the detestable practices of the nations and defiling the temple of the LORD , which he had consecrated in Jerusalem. The Fall of Jerusalem 15 The LORD , the God of their fathers, sent word to them through his messengers again and again, because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place. 16 But they mocked God's messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the LORD was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.
17 He brought up against them the king of the Babylonians, who killed their young men with the sword in the sanctuary, and spared neither young man nor young woman, old man or aged. God handed all of them over to Nebuchadnezzar. Those of you in our national schools should be familiar with demerit points awarded for breaking school rules. The points depend on the crime (disrupting a class might be five points, while fighting might be thirty points). The points are awarded by the discipline teachers and recorded. When your accumulated points reach a certain limit, you can get suspended from school. And when it reaches a higher limit, you get expelled. Our sins are like that. Not that God keeps track with points like that, but our sins build up.
There are many things in our life (bad ones) that don't just happen spontaneously. It's unlikely you'll get beat up for talking trash on one occasion. But if you've already got a reputation as a trash-talking person, chances are some people will tolerate it less. If you're a jerk, your attitude might build up and eventually cause another jerk to blow up at you. Many things happen based on our past decisions. In the passage, God didn't allow the sinning that went on.
In verse 16, He finally delivered what was coming to His people. God didn't allow His people to continue sinning, though He was patient with them. His patience has a limit. We all have back-logged sins in our lives. These are putting us in danger of being disciplined by God. If we don't correct these problems by ourselves, we can rest assured God will.
