And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Footnotes 3:15 Or whom all fatherhood This might get me some flak from some people, but sometimes I wish I were a Jedi (those lightsabre weilding folk from Star Wars). Just so you know, in the Star Wars universe, the Jedi are a bunch of people who have special powers. Their power comes from the "force", a cosmic power that binds them all together which enables them to have lightning reflexes, mind-control power, and physical manipulative abilities (push and pull objects from afar). In the Star Wars movies, you can tell who are Jedi because they have these ultra-cool laser swords called lightsabres.
However, their main powers come from the force. It's not merely the source of an outward power, but it is their whole being. Please keep in mind this is all fiction. However, the same principles apply in our Christian lives. While we may never jump into battles with lightsabres deflecting laser bolts while resolving an intergalactic dispute, we have more in common with the Jedi in the way we live our lives than some Star Trek fans may like to think.
As Christians, we draw our power from God. In the same way the force allows a Jedi to get out of problems that he can't with a lightsabre, we can only endure what gets thrown at us by drawing power from God. Our "lightsabres" (our own strenght, support from other people) can only get us so far, but in the end it is God who gives us the strenght to go on. Try as we might, our batteries would run out leaving us with nothing if we did not have the power of His Spirit (verse 16). A Jedi has to go through rigorous training to strenghten his power and understanding in the force, since it's not something they can just use wield. The same goes for Christians when we call on God for strenght to cope with everything around us. As Christians, we have to train ourselves in the "force" as well. The Holy Spirit strenghtens us and renews our minds when we read the bible, when we pray, and when we fellowship with other believers.
Our training is to have a strong relationship with God. Without this, we will be unable to withstand the temptations and pressure of the dark side. We know we have God and the power of Christ within us. When it comes down to it, the troubles of the world will be bearable because of the strenght we have from God. May the force be with you.
