Abstract

CPU, as the heart of every computer, the evolution of its components marks the evolution of the industry. In this project, questions concerning what makes up the processor, how far we've gone and where we're heading will be addressed, plus a brief note on RISC and CISC, pipelining vs. superscalar designs, etc.

Purpose

The goal of this web page is to provide present/future CMSC 411 students some understanding of how microprocessors are made, how they work, what technologies underlie their development, what will be the future trend of processor development, etc. Through some FAQ's and answers, people can take a brief look at what makes up a microprocessor, what is inside a microprocessor. After reading this web page, we hope the readers, will appreciate some useful knowledge that they will not learn from classrooms.
