I gave a talk on the Java memory model at MIT Sept 10th. The slides

In other news, I have a student working on some of the implementation
issues for immutable objects and/or atomic object creation. I should
have some preliminary results soon. I plan to take a crack at trying
to formalize some of the semantics soon.
