This paper proposes a new form factor algorithm for radiosity solutions. The new algorithm substantially reduces aliasing problems inherent in the {\em hemicube method} without giving up several of the advantages of the hemicube. The algorithm has its basis in the technique of area anti-aliasing in image rendering. Our method preprocesses the input surfaces, and there is also an extra computational cost involved in scan conversion of patches as well as occlusion testing; however, this expense is less than the extra cost associated with an increase in hemicube resolution to improve image quality. Further, the method can be embedded in several existing radiosity algorithms such as adaptive subdivision and progressive refinement radiosity. Finally, the extended area anti-aliasing can also be used in applications other than radiosity (such as image rendering of complex scenes on a raster display device).
