CMSC421 Project Information
There will be three projects throughout the semester in order to give you experience with several fundamental concepts of Artificial Intelligence.
Due to the diversity of the students and their respective programming backgrounds, it will be possible to write the projects in whatever language you wish, with some restrictions. When you decide on the language of your choice, you must first check the project languages page to see if your language will be supported by this class. If you would like to submit a project in a language that is not currently listed on the project languages page, you must email Adam for permission. You will not be able to submit your assignment or get credit for an assignment if it is in a language not supported.
If you are ambivalent about which language to choose, C++ is the preferred language for CMSC421 project submissions.
Furthermore, you can choose to develop your project on whatever operating system you wish. However, when you complete your project, you must verify that it works on a UNIX system. E.g., if you write your project in MS-VisualC++ on your home MS-Windows computer, you must make sure it works with gcc (the GNU c/c++ compiler) on a UNIX machine. All of the programs will be tested in a UNIX environment. If a program is unable to compile in UNIX, you will receive zero credit. The project languages page explicitly states which compability issues you need to address.
Finally, after you complete your project, you need to Tar all of your project files together necessary for compilation, and then only submit the tarfile. You can only submit one tarfile, and only your most recent submission will be graded. There should also be a Makefile including inside your tarfile, if its appropiate for your language. Again, this criteria is defined on the project languages page.
Note: You must also turn in hardcopies of your logs and patterns
You should bring a copy of your patterns and logs (both of the one-on-one conversation and the multiple bot conversation) to class on Thursday, March 6 to hand in to Dr. Hendler. Even if you submit your project early, bring your hardcopies on Thursday. If you decide to submit your assignment late, you will have to arrange a time with the TA to drop off your hardcopies (preferably during his office hours).
To reiterate, you must submit the following in paper form (with your name and student ID# clearly listed on them):
- A list of all your input patterns and their corresponding output patterns
- An example of a one-to-one chat with your chatbot
- A log of your chatbot in multiple conversation with at least three other participants
