How the seminar works (weekly rhythm)

One paper per lecture (starting Week 4)

• All students read the paper

• First one presenter presents, then everyone discuss

• Other roles write reports (due one week after the paper discussion)

Roles (rotated across the semester)

Each week you will sign up for one role and submit the corresponding artifact:

1. Presenter - present the paper as if you were the author of the paper.
2. Scientific Peer Reviewer — write an accept/reject review (strengths, weaknesses, questions, score + confidence).
3. Archaeologist — map the paper in the literature (1 key predecessor + 1 key follow-up, with a mini lineage diagram).
4. Future Researcher — propose a concrete follow-up project + evaluation plan.
5. Industry Practitioner — “product pitch”: integration plan + constraints + what breaks in the real world.
6. Hacker — implement a toy reproduction / partial prototype (with a runnable repo or notebook) and demo in class.
7. Private Investigator — author/lab context: tooling, hardware access, assumptions, potential sources of bias.
8. Social Impact Assessor — stakeholders, benefits, risks/misuse, and mitigation ideas.

Minimum expectations:

• Each student should be each of the roles at least twice.
• Role 6, 7, 8 are considered as one category when calculating the requirement above. For example, You can be hacker and private investigator one time each to fulfill the requirement.
