CMSC 725: Geographical Information Systems and Spatial Databases (Fall 2013)

Reading for Thursday, November 21 (page numbers from the book "Foundations of Multidimensional and Metric Data Structures"):
1. Grid File, EXCELL pages 130-145 (also the relevant slides in hp)
2. Spiral Hashing pp. 156-163
3. See also the general discussion of linear and spiral hashing in Appendices B and C of the book.
4. Note that the slides hp21-hp40 cover this material.
5. Read the discussion of Figure 1.118 on page 185
6. Read the discussion of PM and PMR quadtrees on pages 365-377. If you cannot find the time to read this, at least look at the figures for these data structures.
Class resumes as normal on Tuesday, November 19.
There will be an extra class on Wednesday, October 30 at 5pm (our last makeup) in CSIC 2118.
For Tuesday, October 29, please read the following in the Applications book: Opening (prologue) to Section 5.1, 5.1.1, 5.1.2, 5.2, and 5.3. I will not say much about Section 5.1.3 but you may want to read it. The slides for this topic can be found under "Geometric Properties" with label "gp" in the upper right corner. (they can also be found on pages 561-566 of the full slide set).

Also read the following in the Applications book: Sections 6.1, 6.2, 6.3.2, 6.3.3, 6.4, Opening (prologue) to Section 6.5, 6.5.1, 6.5.2, and 6.6. The slides for these topics can be found under "Transformations" with label "tf" in the upper right corner (pages 567-574 of the full slide set). Also under "Quadtree Region Expansion" with label "bf" in the upper right corner (pages 575-584 of the full slide set). For some reason slides bf9-bf13 are missing from the book of slides for the lectures (the slides after the last one on page 584 which is bf8; so please look at the "Quadtree Region Expansion" slides for this).

Whatever we do not cover on Tuesday, October 29, will be covered on Wednesday, October 30.
For Thursday, October 24, read Chapter 4 of the "Applications of Spatial Data Structures" book. It covers the slides labeled qb0-qb16 on pages 543-559 of the slides set. We will most likely not finish these slides on October 23 and thus this will be continued on Tuesday, October 28.
For Wednesday, October 23, read Chapter 3 of the "Applications of Spatial Data Structures" book. It covers the slides labeled nf1-nf11 on pages 531-541 of the slide set.
There will be no class on Tuesday, October 22. Instead, class will be held Wednesday, October 23 at 5pm in CSIC 2118.
For the week of October 14, please read the material on pages 191-237 of the book "Foundations of Multidimensional and Metric Data Structures", the slides covering this material (up to and including the neighbor finding slides [nf]), and the Object-based/Image-based Image and Object Reps slides.
For Thursday, October 10, please read the plane-sweep slide lecture notes labeled ps0-ps19 and on pages 381-400 of the lecture notes. They are also discussed in the book in Chapter 2 on pages 428-439. You may want to read the rest of the section on plane-sweep methods on pages 439-453 but we will not lecture on it.
There will be an extra class on Wednesday October 9 at 5pm in CSIC 2118.
For Tuesday, October 8, please read the following slides:
1. "Triangulations" slides which are tg0-tg16 (pages 401-417 in the slide set)
2. Slides on "Surfaces" which are sf0-sf11 (pages 419-430 in the slide set)
3. Slides on "Cartographic Analysis" which are cl33-cl67. The focus will be on the algorithm slides in this set such as generalization, windowing, and vector to raster conversion
For Thursday, October 3, please be familiar with slides cl7-cl26 (pages 360-379 in the slide set). After this, we will do the "Triangulations" slides which are tg0-tg16 (pages 401-417 in the slide set).
There will be no class on Tuesday, October 1. Instead, class will be held Wednesday, October 2 at 5pm in CSIC 2118.
For the week of Sept. 30, please read pages 312-355 in the Foundations of Multidimensional Data Structures. Pay particular attention to pages 312-346 (all of page 346 and especially the figures). All figures in this section are very useful in simplifying the presentation and the understanding. I also point you to copies of the pages from the book describing the preferable notation. It can be found here.
There will be an extra class on Wednesday (9/25) at 5pm in room 2118.
The week of Sept. 23, we will go through the Cartographic Modeling, Winged-Edge, and Lath slides. Please read these to prepare for class.
For Tuesday (9/17), please read Summary of Tomlin's Map Algebra. Also, take a look at the Cartographic Modeling slides, which will be presented this week.

**Information on the availability of the textbooks for the class**
The lecture notes, titled "GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS): A TECHNICAL APPROACH" are available on the secure page. If you want a printed version, one can be obtained at the Engineering Copy Center. H. Samet. "Foundations of Multidimensional and Metric Data Structures", Morgan Kaufmann, San Francisco, CA, 2006. H. Samet. "Applications of Spatial Data Structures: Computer Graphics, Image Processing, and GIS". Addison Wesley, Reading, MA, 1990. This book is out of print, but a spiral-bound version of the most recent version is available for sale at the University Book Center.

All graded materials (examinations and programming assignments and homework) must be strictly individual efforts. Cooperation on homework programming assignments is limited to general discussion of the problem (not its solution), and assistance with errors. Additional cooperation is considered academic dishonesty. Transmitting a copy of a solution (in either hardcopy or electronic form), falsely representing the correctness of a program or homework, or delaying other members of the class from completing a programming assignment are considered forms of academic dishonesty.

The instructor is not under obligation to offer a substitute assignment or to give a student a make-up assessment for missing a Major Scheduled Grading Events unless the failure to perform was due to an excused absence. A valid excused absence will need to be granted through the student presenting documentation from the Health Center or from an outside health care professional. This documentation must be submitted within one week of returning to classes and must include dates of incapacitation as well as the name and phone number of the health care provider. No diagnostic information shall be given. Once the period of incapacitation is over, the student must meet the missed academic responsibilities at according to the requirements and specifications set forth by the instructor.
