Wed Aug 9 2:00 pm: Ananta's office hours for tomorrow Thursday will be from 1:00pm - 2:00 pm.

 

Wed Aug 9 11:31 am: Number of release tokens has been increased as discussed in lecture (now you should be able to test release every minute).

 

Wed Aug 9 9:16 am: The late deadline for submitting project #7 is tomorrow Thursday at 9 am.  I will not apply the late penalty for late projects.  However, I will not accept any project after Thursday (9 am).  

 

Mon Aug 7 3:26 am: Thursday Aug 10 will be a study day.  Arkady will be in the TA room from 9:30-10:50 in case you have any doubts about the material.  Ananta will be in the TA room from 11-12 (usual office hours). Thursday is the last day for TA office hours.   Nelson's last office hours will be on Wednesday Aug 9.

 

Mon Aug 7 10:56 am: The submit server is up.  To compensate for the time down, I increased the number of release tokens to six.

Sun Aug 6 1:40 pm:  The campus LDAP system (database for directory ids) is experiencing problems.  This implies you will not be able to login to grades.cs.umd.edu or the submit server.  For the time being, don't try to submit your project as you will get an error.  Keep in mind that the project deadline will not be extended due to this problem.  CVS connections are not affected by this situation.

 

Thu Aug 3 5:25 am: If you have been experiencing problems with CVS then change the password of your CVS repository account.  Instructions to change the password are now available at changing password.

 

Thu Aug 3 9:50 am: Homework #2 scores are now available through grades.cs.umd.edu.

 

Thu Aug 3 9:40 am: You have until tomorrow Friday (Aug 4) to discuss with the TA (Ananta) any issues regarding the grading of the second midterm.

Thu Aug 3 6:57 am: Regarding the CVS problems:  It seems that students that did not change the linuxlab password (provided by grades.cs.umd.edu) are having CVS problems. We are working on this and staff is trying to fix the problem as easy as possible.  I will post a message informing you when the problem has been resolved and when you can try using CVS again. 

 

Wed Aug 2 11:02 am: Midterm #2 will be returned tomorrow Thursday.  Make sure you attend class so you can collect your graded exam.

Mon Jul 31 4:13 pm: The CVS network connection is experiencing problems.  I have notified system administration about it.  Notice that even if you get a CVS error, you can still submit to the submit server.  When you submit a project, a copy is sent to both the CVS repository and to the submit server.  For now just ignore the CVS errors and you will eventually see the dialog box confirming your submission to the submit server.

Sun Jul 23 4:22 pm: From now on, make sure you download any resources we have in the class web site (e.g., lecture slides, code snippets, project descriptions, etc.).  No extensions will be granted due to the class web server being down.  By the way, the submit server runs in a machine different from the web server one.

Mon Jul 10 1:27 am: About project #4:  Some students indicated their server hangs after processing a request.  If you are experiencing this problem ,make sure the server and client are doing synchronized reads.  Also, keep in mind that the server has two main loops: one that process client requests for service and then, once a client connection has been established, there is a loop for servicing the actual client requests (e.g., ping).  This second loops ends when the client sends a disconnect request.

Wed Jul 5 9:05 am: As a result of local storms, some students lost power and could not work on project #3.  We have extended the deadline by one day to compensate for this situation.  The project is now due tomorrow Thursday at 6:00 PM (Late submission: Fri, 07 Jul at 9:00 AM).  Keep in mind that Project #4 will be posted today, as originally scheduled, and its deadline will not be changed.

 

Mon Jul 3 7:41 am: When you update your GUI (e.g., adding a menu entry) you may need to call the pack method of the JFrame class.  This method causes the current window (frame) to be sized to fit the preferred size and layouts of its subcomponents.

 

Sat Jul 1 9:11 am: This Monday Jul 3, instead of lecture, I will hold office hours from 9:30 am - 10:50 am in my office.  Arkady will not have office hours on Monday.

Tue Jun 13 2:19 am: When you check out project #1 for the first time you should have no compilation errors.  If you do chances are the problem is that the default compiler in your Eclipse installation is 1.4.  To fix this problem follow these steps:

• Create a new project and change the default configuration to 5.0.

• Close the project you checked out and open it again.  You may want to execute the clean project option but it should not be necessary).

Tue Jun 13 2:19 am:  Some students have not attempted submitting their project to the submit server yet. You must attempt a submission today, even if you have not implemented the project.

 

Tue Jun 13 11:28 am: About the methods getDealerCardsTotal and getPlayerCardsTotal:

 

These methods return an integer array representing the possible value(s) associated with the provided cards if the cards represent a value less than or equal to 21, or null if cards represent a value higher than 21. The array will have a size of 1 if only one value is associated with the set of cards, and a size of two if two values are possible. For the case of an array of size two, the smaller value must appear in the first array entry.  The project documentation has been updated with this information.
 

Tue Jun 13 11:28 am: About Project #1:

• The Card class equals method has an error.  The last return in the method must return false.  You don't actually need this method for the project.

• The getIntValue() method of the CardValue class must return 10 for a Jack, Queen, and King.  Please update these values (which currently are 11, 12, 13, respectively).

• Initializes the player's account to 200.00 and the initial bet to 0. Feel free to initialize any other fields. Keep in mind that the constructor does not define the deck(s) of cards.

• Keep in mind that the playerStand method is responsible for updating the player's account according to the bet placed (if any).
