Women of Applied Mathematics: Research and Leadership

[Overview | Schedule | Participants | How To Apply | Logistics | Panel Discussions | Program Outreach | Resources]

Thank you for your interest in this workshop. All slots for this workshop have been filled, and we are no longer accepting applications.

We are soliciting applications from early-career women in applied mathematics to participate in the workshop. Participants will receive travel funding. After the workshop, early-career participants are expected to lead an activity promoting women in mathematics and submit a report detailing that activity.

Early-career is defined as several years past the postdoctoral stage, at the point where one is nearing or just past promotion and increasing one's leadership responsibilities (e.g., leading research teams, being PI or co-PI on large proposals, and/or pursuing opportunities in management or administration). Roughly speaking, applicants in this category would be 5-12 years past the Ph.D.

Applications will be accepted until all slots are filled and should include the following:

  • Your curriculum vitae or resumé, giving evidence of research relevant to the DOE definition of applied mathematics (defined briefly as "Research on the underlying mathematical understanding and numerical algorithms to enable effective description and prediction of physical systems"), and including a list of your past mentoring activities and service to the profession
  • A proposed title and abstract for your 25-minute technical presentation.
  • A statement of why you wish to participate and a description of a specific activity to promote women in mathematics that you will organize after the workshop. Possible activites include organizing a mentoring program for women at your institution, holding a series of lunches for women in your department to discuss ideas from this workshop, or developing a web resource.

Electronic applications in plain text or PDF format are preferred. Please send applications or any questions to Tamara Kolda at tgkolda@sandia.gov.
