Maria (Masha) Gordina
Assistant Professor
Department of Mathematics
University of Connecticut
Storrs, CT 06269

Right after the workshop I held informal meetings with our female postdocs, where I described my experience during the workshop. It lead to discussions on different career paths and difficult choices they are facing. I encouraged them to be more active in research opportunities, in particular, going to conferences and giving talks on their research. At the same time I became more active in regular luncheons for women in Mathematics, Science and Engineering supported by the deans of College of Letters and Sciences and the School of Engineering of the University of Connecticut. There we have an opportunity to meet with university officials in an informal setting, ask questions, voice concerns etc.

As a part of my follow-up activities I created a web page with links to sites devoted to women in sciences resources at http://www.math.uconn.edu/~gordina/women_science.html. This page has information on funding, societies and organizations, data on representation of women in academia, workshops etc. The site was advertised by our department's Associate Head for Graduate Studies during an event for graduate students. Our department is very supportive of women in mathematics, and I am fortunate to have help and encouragement of our chairman as well as several faculty members.
