Scheduling Parallel Workloads :
Implicit Scheduling vs Co-scheduling

Suman Banerjee - Gayathri Chittiappa

Abstract:

In this project we evaluate and compare the benefits of scheduling parallel jobs using different scheduling techniques. The traditional co-scheduling technique schedules all processes of the same job to be active simultaneously. However, implicit scheduling, where each processor makes independent decisions to schedule processes of different jobs might be competitive with co-scheduling under certain constraints and assumptions. In this project, we implemented a discrete event simulator to compare the performance of both these techniques and search for methods to gain the performance benefits of co-scheduling without the costly requirement of a centralized scheduler.
