Frederickson, Kambhampati, and Casalena named Alumni of the Year for 2018

 

Greg Frederickson, Alumnus of the Year 2018

Greg N. Frederickson (M.S. 1976; Ph.D. 1977)

A popular author in the world of recreational mathematics, Greg N. Fredrickson is also an award-winning researcher and professor of computer science at Purdue University. He has spent most of his career working on the analysis of algorithms, with special emphasis on data structures, and graph and network algorithms.  He has published four books, and been the recipient of a George Polya Award from the Mathematical Association of America in both 2004 and 2009.

 

Subbarao Kambhampati, Alumnus of the Year

 

Subbarao Kambhampati (M.S. 1985; Ph.D. 1989)

A fellow and president (2016-18)  of the Association of the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), Kambhampati researches and teaches in the field with a focus on planning and decision-making, in the context of human-machine collaboration.  In addition to being an award-winning professor at Arizona State University, he has published over 250 articles in AI and his research is widely cited.

 

Anthony Casalena, Alumnus of the Year

 

Anthony Casalena (B.S. 2005)

Anthony Casalena is the Founder and CEO of Squarespace,  a service-based content management system, integrated website builder, blogging platform, hosting service, commerce platform, and domain name registrar. He started the company from his dorm room in 2003 at the University of Maryland, where he was also an active member of the Hinman CEOs Program. During his company’s early years, Anthony acted as the sole engineer, designer, and support representative for the entire Squarespace platform. In addition to running the company and setting overall product strategy, he remains actively involved in many departments of the company that he had previously run himself.
