October 2, (Thursday)

6:30 pm: Planning Meeting

This meeting will be open to all ISERN members. The goal is to adjust and complete the meeting agenda.

October 4 (Saturday)

9 am - 10:30 am: Welcome (Giuseppe Visaggio)

11:00 am -1:30 pm: Hot Topics I (organizer: Larry Votta)

The session will host presentations by ISERN participants who are working on issues that are not yet widespread in empirical software engineering but appear to be particularly promising.

• Qualitative Research Methods Borrowed from the Social Sciences (Carolyn Seaman)
• Using Interviews and Diaries to Understand Process Enactment (Larry Votta)
• Software Process Evolution, a framework and some experiences (Reidar Conradi)

1:30 pm - 3:00 pm: Lunch

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm: Experience Factory Start-Ups (organizer: Dieter Rombach)

• Three EF start-ups within Daimler-Benz (Kurt Schneider)
• SEC Project (Dieter Rombach)
• The Norwegian SPIQ project (Sivert Soerumgaard and Reidar Conradi)

4:00 pm - 6:00 pm: Parallel Project Meetings (organizer: Dieter Rombach)

Ongoing ISERN projects with more than one participating site will hold parallel meetings. Each leader of parallel sessions will present a brief status of the project, raising some open issues. Each participant of the ISERN meeting may choose to attend his/her project meeting, or attend as observer somewhere.

October 5 (Sunday)

9 am - 10 am: Reports on results of parallel project meetings

The leaders of parallel sessions from the previous day will summarize results to entire ISERN group

• research agenda and other plans for the next year

followed by a short question/answer session.

10:30 am - 12:30 pm: Hot Topics II (organizer: James Miller)

The session will host presentations by ISERN participants who are working on issues that are not yet widespread in empirical software engineering but appear to be particularly promising.

• Is the PSP useful as a vehicle for experimentation? (Claes Wohlin)
• Software Forensics (Shari L. Pfleeger)
• Reading for Construction (Filippo Lanubile)

12:30 pm - 2:00 pm: Lunch

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm: New Experiments/Replications (organizer: Lionel Briand)

The session will host presentations by ISERN participants who planned a new experiment or replication, and want to present the laboratory package so that others can run the experiment in their sites.

Proposals:

• Experimenting with techniques for defect detection in requirements (proposer: Forrest Shull)
• Comparing defect detection techniques with respect to embedded real-time software (proposer: Frank Houdek)
• Evaluating the effect of Coad&Yourdon's design principles on the maintainability of object-oriented software (proposer: Christian Bunse)
• Comparing object-oriented and structured analysis techniques with respect to embedded real-time software (proposer: Frank Houdek)

4:30 pm -6:00 pm: General Business (Dieter Rombach)

• Summary review of current and past year's events
• Next year meeting
