Program Overview

The Java Passport Program is a program for middle and high school students interested in computer programming. The program includes an emphasis on encouraging females, African-Americans, and Latinos to the fields of Math and Computer Science. For the Spring semester students attend classes on selected weekends. This program is offered by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland at College Park and it is offered at no cost to the student (students are only responsible for any transportation arrangements).

The program introduces the principles associated with computer programming. Students will be exposed to the principles of designing, implementing and testing computer programs using the JavaScript language (not Java). In addition, the program provides an overview of what computer science is about.

This program is very competitive and the number of spaces available is limited. Students with the strongest academic background are selected. Homeschooled students are encouraged to apply to this program. For information regarding the documentation required for homeschooled students, please contact Nelson Padua-Perez (nelson@cs.umd.edu).
