Large WLAN network deployment & measurement analysis

    [ Overview ]
  • At the 59th IETF meeting in Seoul (2004 March), we designed and deployed 802.11 a/b dual-mode network at the hotel. This network covered 32 APs, 1293 clients for 5 days. To monitor the network status, we collected AP SYSLog and SNMP data. After the meeting, we analyzed the network statistics and user behavior from the measured results. One major distinction of this work from other related work is that we considered co-located 802.11a and 11b networks, and evaluated their network characteristics in a comparative manner.
    [ Results ]
  • user arrival and traffic patterns highly depend on the meeting schedule, especially in the case of APs located in the meeting rooms
  • 802.11a traffic per user was more intensive than 802.11b traffic
  • sojourn time taken with a single AP was similar between 11a and 11b, but 11b the client handed off more frequently
  • The 11a hand-offs occurred only between relatively closer APs compared to the 11b's case
