Abstract

            Traditionally, diabetics have relied on a combination of finger-pricking blood sugar meters and insulin injections to control their blood sugar levels. Recent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of two new technologies in controlling blood sugar levels: the insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring. The insulin pump allows the user to program insulin delivery, which is done through a hidden needle inserted in the body. Continuous glucose monitoring prevents any fluctuations in blood sugar levels from going unnoticed. Soon, blood sugar measurements will be taken through the needle already used by the insulin pump, combining these technologies. Once this occurs, the interface and functionality of the current insulin pumps will be unable to take full advantage of the possibilities available.

            The AGIL Control System is designed specifically to take advantage of this new integrated system. It provides insulin delivery, blood sugar management, record keeping, programmable insulin pump control, and emergency notification, all on a PocketPC device.
