In 1992 and 1993, a series of experiments using the NetDyn tool was run at the University of Maryland at College Park to characterize network behavior. These studies identified multiple design and implementation faults in the Internet. Since that time, there has been wide array of changes to the Internet. In 1997/1998, we conducted a replication of the NetDyn experiments in order to characterize the end-to-end behaviors in the current environment.

Experiment Setup

In this study we conducted the experiments to six sites, observing the characteristics of the end-to-end connection for a selected periods of typically half-hour duration. Most of the experiments were conducted daily from Feburary 15, 1998 to February 20, 1998. The observations were repeated four times daily, at early morning hour, before noon, early afternoon and in the early evening. In order to note the route(s) taken by the packets, the traceroute program was executed at regular interval during the experiments.

We also made some general observations regarding the pattern of the round-trip-times.

Data Interpretation

Various kind of network and end-host phenomena manifest themselves in the data obtained through the experimentation. Below we document some of these events and show the signature of such manifestations.
