Diversity Statement
February 2, 2008
We believe that improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women and minorities is an issue that concerns everyone in computer science. We hope that every computer scientist embraces the principle that all people, regardless of gender or minority status, deserve equal opportunities to participate in our discipline. Although progress has been made toward putting that principle into practice, research shows that many barriers to the success of women and minorities in computer science continue to exist. Considering the important contributions women and minorities have made to the discipline and the diversity of new perspectives and insights these individuals bring, both men and women, majorities and minorities, should realize that attracting more members of underrepresented groups will elevate the quality of computer science and our quality of life as computer scientists.
