In Pictures: The SMART Lab

Inside the University of Maryland lab, researchers design small, interactive devices that explore how people engage with technology through physical experience.

At the University of Maryland’s Department of Computer Science, the Small Artifacts Lab, or SMART Lab, focuses on designing and studying technology as physical objects. Led by Assistant Professor of Computer Science Huaishu Peng, the lab develops compact, intelligent devices that emphasize touch, interaction and real-world use. Researchers examine how these artifacts are created and how their physical form can shape the way people engage with technology.

Among them is Ph.D. student Zeyu Yan, whose research explores how hardware design can be rethought to address electronic waste. His work investigates alternative approaches to circuit construction that allow devices to be taken apart, reused and reconfigured rather than discarded. The following portrait highlights the lab’s work and the researchers contributing to it.
