Any year:
- December 15 - Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity (GFSD) (US citizens only) - Formerly known as the National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC), was founded in 1989 “To increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in STEM fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool.” Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity (GFSD) is a partnership between federal agencies & laboratories, industry, and higher education institutions.
First and Second Year Students
- October 18 - NSF graduate research Fellowship (US citizens only) - The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions. Previous winners: Jason Fan, Makana Castillo-Martin, Nicholas Franzese, and Lillian Huang (all 2020).
- October 24 - Hertz Foundation (US citizens only) - The Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend.
- October 12 - Facebook Emerging Scholar Program (https://research.facebook.com/programs/emerging_scholar_program/) - This program is designed to specifically support talented students from underrepresented minority groups and encourage them to continue their PhD studies, pursue innovative research, and engage with the broader research community.
- Oct 31 - National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship (US citizens only) - The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. Previous winners: Michael Rosenberg (2019) and Alex Hanson(2020)
- November 1 - Soros Fellowships for New Americans – For permanent residents or naturalized citizens if born abroad, or children of naturalized citizen parents if born here. Criteria for selection include creativity, originality, initiative and sustained accomplishment.
- November 2 - NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Opportunities (NSTRO23) - Focused on graduate student research and development of advanced and innovative space technologies critical to exploring and understanding the Earth, our solar system, and the universe. Eligibility: U.S. Citizens with 1 year or less of technical graduate studies and have at least 1 year remaining (if MS, 2 if PhD). Initial funding will be for 1 year; continuations are contingent upon satisfactory progress. $40k stipend.
- November 13 - National GEM Consortium – Mission is to enhance the value of the nation's human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master's and doctoral levels in engineering and science.
- December 13 - Ford Foundation (US citizens only, predoctoral) - Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.
- April 30 - ACM SIGHPC/Intel Computational & Data Science Fellowships (http://www.sighpc.org/fellowships) - These fellowships are designed to increase the diversity of students pursuing graduate degrees in data science and computational science. Specifically targeted at women or students from racial/ethnic backgrounds that have not traditionally participated in the computing field, the program is open to students pursuing degrees at institutions anywhere in the world.
Second through Nth Year Students
- October 9 [August 28] - Microsoft PhD Fellowship - The Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship is a two-year fellowship program for outstanding PhD students nominated by their universities.
- [TBA in Oct] - nVidia Graduate Fellowship - The NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship Program provides funding to Ph.D. students who are researching topics that will lead to major advances in the graphics and high-performance computing industries, and are investigating innovative ways of leveraging the power of the GPU.
- October 12 [September 15] - IBM PhD Fellowship - The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards Program is an intensely competitive worldwide program, which honors exceptional Ph.D. students who have an interest in solving problems that are important to IBM and fundamental to innovation in many academic disciplines and areas of study. Previous winners: Eddie Schoute (2020)
- October 27 - Adobe Research Fellowship - Recipients are selected based on their research (creative, impactful, important, and realistic in scope) and how their work would contribute to Adobe, their technical skills (ability to build complex computer programs) and personal skills (problem-solving ability, communication, leadership, organizational skills, ability to work in teams).
- October 15 [September 18] and March 15 [February 1] - International Graduate Research Fellowships - These fellowships provide graduate students a meaningful research experience in an international context, broadening the student’s knowledge and perspective. The fellowships take advantage of ongoing collaborations between UMD faculty and their international colleagues, and, through graduate student exchange, also will enhance those collaborations.
- October 12 - Facebook Fellowship – Students must be nominated by a faculty member. Goal is to help solve technical challenges, attract talent, and contribute to the academic community. Previous winners: Mohammad Rastegari (2014) and Elissa Redmiles (2017).
- November 1 - Cosmos Club Scholars Program - Provides grants to meet specific research needs not covered by other supporting funds, including but not limited to special supplies, travel, unanticipated expenses that would enhance the work, and the like. Specifically excluded are general financial support, tuition, and living expenses (except in connection with supported travel)
- November 2 [October 1] - Google PhD Fellowship - The Google U.S./Canada PhD Student Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional work in computer science, related disciplines, or promising research areas. Previous winners: Soheil Behnezhad, Mahsa Derakhshan, and Yuan Su (2019-2020)
- November 15 - Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowship – For students focusing on systems research. Preference will be given to students with a desire to work in an industrial research lab and those working on innovative research projects in areas such as security, storage, backup, virtualization, cloud computing, and big data infrastructure.
- November 16 - Department of Energy’s Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program - The SCGSR program provides graduate dissertation/thesis research opportunities at DOE national laboratories.
- December- The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship (women only) - In her honor, Google is proud to honor Anita’s memory and support women in technology with the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. Google hopes to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders in the field.
- January - DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (US citizens only) - Fellows in the DOE CSGF program are using high performance computing to better understand fundamental properties of the world and universe around us, and to solve complex problems in areas of national importance, such as climate change and sustainable energy sources.
- February 12 [January 4] - Simons Award in Theoretical Computer Science (https://www.simonsfoundation.org/) - These awards will be made to graduate students with an outstanding track record of research accomplishments. The Simons Foundation seeks to identify and support emerging stars by providing additional support to enable them to freely pursue their research interests.
- February - Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship - We believe that research and development is the key to harnessing the power of imagination and to discovering new possibilities. We are excited to announce a new kind of fellowship that promotes Qualcomm’s core values of innovation, execution and teamwork. Our goal is to enable students to pursue their futuristic innovative ideas. Previous winners: Anupam Guha (2016), Michael Maynord (2016).
- March 7 [February 2] - Graduate Student Summer Research Fellowships - Graduate Student Summer Research Fellowships...are intended to enable students to prepare for or complete a key benchmark in their program’s requirements. Previous winners: Teja Maddali, Samuel Potter, Ning Yu, and Daniel Votipka (2019)
- March 7 [February 2] - Graduate School Endowed Awards - The Graduate School currently offers four prestigious endowed awards: the Dr. Mabel S. Spencer Award for Excellence in Graduate Achievement; the Dr. James W. Longest Memorial Award for Social Science Research; the Michael J. Pelczar Award for Excellence in Graduate Study; and the Phi Delta Gamma Graduate Fellowship.
- March 15 - Bloomberg Data Science Ph.D. Fellowship - Intended to provide Ph.D. students (third-year and higher) working in broadly-construed data science with support and encouragement of ground-breaking publications in both academic journals and conference proceedings.
Finishing Students
- October 31 [September 15] - ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award - ACM established the Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize and encourage superior research and writing by doctoral candidates in computer science and engineering. These awards are presented annually at the ACM Awards Banquet.
- December 6 - Ford Foundation (US citizens only, dissertation) - Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.
- November 15 - AAUW Dissertation Fellowship (US citizen women only, dissertation) - American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations.
- February 14 [January 12] - Ann G. Wylie Dissertation Fellowships (http://gradschool.umd.edu/funding/fellowships-awards/student-fellowships...) - one-semester awards intended to support outstanding doctoral students who are in the final stages of writing their dissertation and whose primary source of support is unrelated to their dissertation. Previous winners: Vahid Liaghat (2014), Preeti Bhargava (2015), Arti Ramesh (2016).
- February 14 [January 12] - University of Maryland Distinguished Dissertation Award (http://gradschool.umd.edu/funding/fellowships-awards/student-fellowships...) - The Distinguished Dissertation Award recognizes original work that makes an unusually significant contribution to the discipline.
